Shelley R. Slade has been a member of the Washington, D.C. law firm Vogel, Slade & Goldstein, LLP since 2000. Her practice is dedicated to the representation of qui tam plaintiffs under the federal False Claims Act and analogous state false claims laws. In 2007, 2009, and 2011, the Washingtonian Magazine named her a "top whistleblower attorney" in their biannual rating of top lawyers.

Prior to entering private practice, Ms. Slade served in 1998 and 1999 as the Senior Counsel for Health Care Fraud in the Civil Division of the Department of Justice, coordinating the Civil Division’s health care enforcement efforts with other agencies and the private sector, handling related policy and legislative matters, and instructing Department of Justice attorneys and investigators on the investigation and prosecution of false claims act matters. Between 1990 and 1997, she investigated and litigated cases under the False Claims Act, specializing in matters involving programs of the Department of Defense and the Department of Health & Human Services. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, she practiced law at the D.C. law firm Arnold & Porter.

Ms. Slade graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1980, and obtained her law degree from Stanford University in 1984.

In 2007, Ms. Slade was elected to the Boards of Directors of the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund and the Taxpayers Against Fraud False Claims Act Center, non-profit, public interest organizations dedicated to combating fraud against the government and protecting public resources through the promotion and use of the False Claims Act and other whistleblower reward and private enforcement provisions. She serves on the executive committee of both Boards. Ms. Slade was named “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year” by the D.C. Bar Association in 1989.

While with the Department of Justice, she received the General Services Administration’s “Public Service Award,” the Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General’s “Integrity Award,” and the Department of Justice “Meritorious Award.” Ms. Slade has testified as an expert on False Claims Act matters, including in hearings on managed care fraud conducted by the National Association of Attorneys General and, most recently, before the U.S. Congress and the New York City Council. She served on the Advisory Board for Westlaw’s False Claims Act treatise, published in 2004.
